Dau Go Cave
Dau Go cave is about 5000m2, located on the height of 27 m compared with sea level with the same age of Thien Cung cave. In the middle of the beautiful Halong Bay, a cave named rustic folk: Dau Go. The cave is located on Dau Go island. Looking back from far, the cave entrance is blue with a jellyfish shape, through 90 stone steps to the cave entrance. The cave arch is about 25 m high, from above is hundreds of stalactites hang down like a strange waterfall.
The cave is divided into three main compartments. The first part like a dome is filled with natural light, the cave ceiling is a giant “oil painting”, depicting the natural landscape with wild rock forests in many colors creating many strange shapes, depending on the rich imagination of each person: the elephants are looking for food, the bewildering deers, the sleepy lion …, the bottom is a turtle swimming between immense water. Standing under the dome of the cave, it feels like standing in the middle of an ancient castle, with massive architecture. Passing through the first compartment, through a narrow gate, we will enter the second compartment of the cave. The light shining here is blurry, the odd paintings show mysterious glitter. The stone flowers are hidden at some moments, the images are both familiar and strange to make people both scared and curious … To the third part of the cave, the cave suddenly expands. At the end of the cave is a well with clear fresh water in four seasons. Unconsciously we look up in the dim light, we recognize around the images of the ancient citadel, on which is going to be a melee of elephants, people and horses crowded with swords, all as bursting and suddenly petrified.
According to ancient lore, the cave is called Dau Go because in the resistance war against the Nguyen Mong, Tran Hung Dao has prepared many wooden limestone stakes here to plug into the Bach Dang river, creating a famous water battle in history. Then there are many pieces of wood left so it is called Dau Go cave. There is also called Giau Go (hiding wood) cave because it was said that this was the place to hide the wooden stakes to prepare for Bach Dang battle against Nguyen – Mong. If the Thien Cung grotto is delicate and modern, Dau Go cave is majestic and very massive. The Merveille de Monde (World Wonder) of France published in 1938 specializing in tourism introduced the world famous landscapes called the Dau Go as Grotte des merveilles (cave of wonders). That’s exactly correct. Dau Go is as the focus of an ancient architectural complex, wild beauty and tranquility with many stone columns, stone pillars, small rock stalks, soaring as to reach the blue sky.
