Halong Bay is one of the famous bays, it annually attracts millions of domestic and foreign tourists to come to travel. With a length of 50 km, Halong Bay is 165 km northwest of Hanoi, 60 km west of Hai Phong city, 184 km east of Mong Cai border gate, and the south to the Gulf of Tonkin.
Owning a diverse and complex terrain including hills, valleys, coastal areas and islands, Halong is one of the oldest established sites in Vietnam. With its geological, cultural and historical values, it has created an attractive destination with valuable sights.
This summer, if you are preparing for Halong tour for the whole family; however, this is the first time you come to Halong, so it is not surprising to choose the vehicles as well as the roads from Hanoi to Halong. We would like to share some information on the way to Halong from Hanoi to help you choose the most suitable transportation for your Halong trip.
At present, transportation routes to Halong have formed a fairly complete and basically upgraded network; the goverment has completed a project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 18, National Highway 10, and National Highway 183. The urban road system has also been upgraded and expanded to cover both sidewalks and drainage systems. Main traffic density is 5.6 km/Km2.
The main traffic routes from Hanoi to Halong:
1. By road:
From Hanoi to Halong Bay, you can follow these routes:
Hanoi – Bac Ninh – Halong: 155 km.
This is the shortest route from Hanoi to Halong, going by car takes from 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 30, the itinerary as follows:
– From Hanoi, follow Highway 5 – Sai Dong junction: 10 km.
– From Sai Dong, follow the Highway 1 – Bac Ninh: 23 km.
– From Bac Ninh province: follow Highway 18 – Pha Lai – Chi Linh – Dong Trieu – Uong Bi – Halong: 122 km.
Hanoi – Hai Duong – Halong: 170km.
This is a convenient road, from Hanoi through Hai Duong city, to Nam Sach town, turn to Highway 183 through Sao Do, Dong Trieu, Uong Bi and Ha Long township, from 3 to 4 hours.
Hanoi – Hai Duong – Hai Phong – Halong: 160km.
This is the road through Hai Duong city, to Quan Toan (Hai Phong), turn to Highway 10 connecting to Highway 18A in Uong Bi town to Halong, time from 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes.
2. By railway from Hanoi – Kep – Halong: 190km
Hanoi – Halong train
The railway from Hanoi Railway Station goes through Kep (Yen Vien) to Ha Long, departs from Yen Vien Station (Hanoi) at 5:15 am daily, traveling time: 7 hours.
Currently, this road is being renovated and will become the most modern railway in Vietnam after being completed and put into operation.
Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi) – Bac Ninh – Halong: 160km.
The road from Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi) to Halong is very convenient, saving time.
Noi Bai International Airport (Noi Bai) – Bac Ninh (32km) to Bac Ninh, connecting to the Highway 18A through Pha Lai, Sao Do, Dong Trieu, Uong Bi to Halong.
Arrive Halong by helicopter
This is a taxi service to transport visitors by helicopter with the capacity of 7 people (including pilots and passengers), along the Hanoi – Quang Ninh route and from Halong to visit the scenic spots on the Halong Bay. This new service has been put into operation since August 2008.
